![]() Through the years the property has hosted cock fighting, gambling and Friday night boxing matches refereed by Ernest Hemingway. One hundred years ago, the owners of this Dade County Pine structure sold spirits to Key West and Florida Keys residents. Located in Bahama Village, Blue Heaven restaurant has the true atmosphere of Key West an historic building, outdoor dining, cats and chickens running loose, a rope swing, an outdoor bar at the foot of an old water tower, and artists and craftsmen display their wares in the backyard near the gift shop. Blue Heaven is THE place to go for Sunday Brunch, so do not go without reservations! They have an extensive wine list and very complete bar. The excellent food is an eclectic mix of seafood, Caribbean, and vegetarian dishes. Blue Heaven is highly recommended!įull disclosure: I worked at Blue Heaven restaurant as a cook for about 5 years, until 2001, while doing research for the Food Reference Website. The restaurant is located in a residential neighborhood, so don’t expect a parking space and you’ll pay for a good meal, but walk or cab in and get your money’s worth. Many of the popular places have very “kitch” gift shops attached to them, but you’ll find the small store on the Blue Heaven property a worthwhile stop on your way out. I’ve never been disappointed at Blue Heaven. They do some unique sauces that highlight the main dish not overwhelm it. You can select anything from surf and turf to yellowtail snapper to steak. It’s uncanny really.īack to the menu… It surprises you when you see the previously mentioned “ambiance” and then you look at your entrée choices. They’re extremely friendly and they know their food and can direct you to items that will be just what is right for you. ![]() The wait staff will have everyone’s name at the table before all the orders are made and I don’t believe I’ve seen many of them carry paper and pen. I’m meant to understand that people vie for the opportunity to serve tables at Blue Heaven, but you better be good. The description of the environment alone could stand as the soul lure that draws in the clientele, but then you get the menu. You could well be in the Key West of the 1920’s if left to your imagination. Is its popularity based on anything concrete, or is it just a façade? You will definitely find your surroundings on the interesting side with meals served at tables outdoors on a dirt floor, plenty of chickens and roosters are roaming the property, cats sleeping on fences, chairs, rooftops and on the bar and a parachute slung over the trees acting as a sun blocker. I’ve heard it called “My Blue Heaven,” “Heavenly Blue,” “the place with the roosters and cats” and numerous other configurations, but everyone seems to know about it. I would guess it’s probably the most popular restaurant on the island if for no other reason then the shear numbers of people who inquire about it. There’s a quaint and special place to eat in Key West that locals and visitors alike just seem to rave about. ![]() Walk, ride your bike or scooter, or take a pedicab or taxi. Reservations: Reservations accepted for large parties only. The service was ok but not good enough to make us go back.Note: Blue Heaven closes each year for 6 weeks in Sept/Oct I got a kick out of the roosters just walking around under the tables. My husband didnt even enjoy it after all that. By the time you get done ordering the omelette you want you're gonna pay about $15. My husband ordered an omelette and had to pay an extra dollar for every ingredient, for example, they do not have a "western" omelette on the menu so if you want onions and peppers then you will have to pay an extra $2.00. There was hardly any flavor to any of it except the banana bread, that was the only thing I really liked. I ordered eggs with breakfast potatoes, bacon and banana bread. ![]() The menu was pretty weak and did not have a vast amount of selections. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. I went here for breakfast with my husband after a few of our friends told us it was the best breakfast we will ever have.
